I expect too much

Look, the comma is the soul of punctuation. It imposes a small amount of order, but it’s also a stylistic convention that, to me, represents something like breath. It doesn’t have the poise and balance of the period itself—it’s inherently asymmetrical. It’s almost the perfect piece of punctuation. It’s the Steven Nash of punctuation—in the right system, it becomes supremely useful. It raises the game of all the characters around it. But in the wrong hands the comma is a stupid dullard that inhibits production.
